Five miles from the Racecourse, in the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin in Overton-on-Dee, twenty-one yew trees have been growing for the best part of two thousand years - one of the Seven Wonders of Wales.
A yew doesn't die the way most trees do. The old wood rots from the inside and new growth comes up through it, from the same roots, so what's standing there today has been standing, in one form or another, for the better part of two millennia.

The yew trees in Overton's churchyard predate the church around them - some of the twenty-one are close to two thousand years old, and the oldest wasn't planted so much as it was simply always there. It's one of the Seven Wonders of Wales, and it works on a principle worth borrowing: the old growth rots away, new growth comes up from the same roots, and the tree just carries on being itself, generation after generation.
